My Little Butterfly (ages 5+)

For this craft you will need:

  • Round paper coffee filters
  • Watercolor paints
  • Craft paints
  • Paintbrushes
  • A jar with water (for washing brushes)
  • Scissors
  • Glue
  • Clothespins
  • Colored paper
  • Glitter (optional)
  • Markers

  1. Paint various colors onto a paper coffee filter with a paintbrush and water color paints. Wash your brush with fresh water in between each color. Let dry. You can also draw on designs with markers.
  2. Paint a clothespin with craft paint. We have found it looks best when the clothespin is painted a color similar to the colors on the coffee filter. Let dry.
  3. Pinch the filter in the middle like a bow tie.
  4. Clip the clothespin on to the middle of the paper coffee filter.
  5. Fan out each side of the filter to resemble a butterfly's wings.
  6. Using the scissor, cut out two short, skinny strips from the construction paper.
  7. Glue the strips onto the clothespin for antennae.

These butterflies make great decorations. Clip them onto random places around the house for a nice suprise. Experiment with different color combinations to make different butterflies. As with all of our butterfly crafts for kids, creativity is always key. Be as creative as possible!

Black Butterfly (ages 5+)

For this craft you will need:
  • Black and white construction paper
  • Scissors
  • Various colors of chalk

  1. Fold a piece of black construction paper in half.
  2. Trace the shape of a butterflies wing on one side, starting and ending the line at the fold. The shape of a wind looks something like the letter "B".
  3. Cut along the line.
  4. Unfold the paper to reveal the complete butterfly.
  5. Trace a long oval on the white construction paper and cut it out.
  6. Glue the oval in the middle of the butterfly wings to make a body.
  7. Decorate the butterfly's wings with colored chalk. Experiment with different designs and colors. Be creative!

Collage Butterfly (age 7+)

For this craft you will need:

  • Cardboard
  • Scissors
  • Various collage materials such as bits of newspaper, colored papers, and old pictures
  • Glue
  • Tape (optional)
  1. Trace the shape of a butterfly onto the cardboard.
  2. Cut out the shape along the line.
  3. Arrange the various collage materials on the cardboard butterfly. Glue the materials down.
  4. To preserve the butterfly better, cover it with clear tape.

Be creative with your collage and have fun! The more random materials you have for the collage, the better. For a twist on any of our butterfly crafts for kids, change up the materials. Kids love working with many different materials.
