Caterpillar Crafts

Caterpillar crafts for kids are a great way to bring the spirit of the outdoors to your craft time. Caterpillars make great topics for crafts. Our crafts are fun, easy, and age-specific so you can be sure to find the perfect for your needs. Take this opportunity to do a fun craft and teach your children about caterpillars. While you are at it, show your children what a caterpillar will become using our butterfly crafts. Be sure to be creative and have fun making our caterpillar projects.

Cardboard Caterpillar (ages 7+)

For this craft you will need:

  • One cardboard egg-carton
  • A pencil
  • One pipe clenaer
  • Scissors
  • Markers

  1. Using the scissors, carefully cut out one of the rows of egg cups from the cardboard egg-carton. This will be your caterpillar.
  2. Draw a face on the front cup. Decorate the rest of the caterpillar. We suggest coloring the entire egg carton cup row with markers. You can also paint it with craft paint, but if you don't want the mess, markers work fine.
  3. Cut the pipe clenaer into a 6 inch piece.
  4. Use the pencil to carefully poke two holes into the top of the head egg cup.
  5. Fold the pipe cleaner in half.
  6. Turn the caterpillar over and poke one end of the pipe cleaner into each hole.
  7. Curl the pipe cleaner ends into antennae.

With all of our caterpillar crafts, the most important thing is to be creative. Decorate the caterpillar the way you would like. Use a variety of materials for a new twist.

Paper Caterpillar (ages 5+)

For this craft you will need:
  • Various colors of construction paper
  • Scissors
  • Markers
  • Tape
  • A pencil

  1. Stack several sheets of construction paper on top of each other. We like using rainbow colors.
  2. Trace a circle on the top sheet of construction paper. The size should vary depending on the number of sheets you are using. If you have more sheets, trace a smaller circle.
  3. Cut along the line you traced. When you seperate the sheets you should have several circle.
  4. Make a line of circles. Each circle should slightly overlap the circle before it.
  5. Attach the circles together with tape.
  6. Cut two thin pieces of colored paper.
  7. Tape the two pieces onto the first circle to make antennae.
  8. Color two eyes on the first circle with markers.
  9. Decorate the caterpillar however you would like.

Caterpillar crafts tip: Find circular objects in your house like pans, buttons, or tiny plates to trace to make drawing circles easier.

Rocking Caterpillar (age 5+)

For this craft you will need:

  • Small rocks
  • Craft paint
  • Paint brushes
  • A jar with clean water (for cleaning brushes)

  1. Go outside and gather some small rocks. Clean them off with some water and dry them.
  2. Paint the rocks different colors. Let dry.
  3. After the rocks dry, paint a face on one of them. Feel free to decorate the rest of the rocks with little designs with paint such as stars, polka dots, and swirls.
  4. Arrange the rocks in a line, putting the rock with a face first.
Caterpillar crafts are great opportunities to experience the great outdoors. Have fun taking a nature walk to gather rocks. While you are outside, feel free to pick other nature materials to use to decorate your caterpillar.
