Christmas Tree Clay Pot (ages 8+)
For this project you will need:- one small clay pot - colored pencils - cotton balls - one paper towel roll - green construction paper - glue - scissors
1. Decorate the outside of the pot with different Christmas and/or winter designs. You may want to plan out your designs first on paper and then draw them lightly on the pot with pencil before coloring them in with colored pencil. 2. Using the scissors cut out six triangles that are exactly the same size from the green construction paper. Each triangle should be about one fourth of the size of the paper towel roll. 3. Glue a triangle on one of the long sides of the paper towel roll. The triangle's base should be halfway up the bottom of the paper towel roll. 4. Repeat step #4 on the opposite side of the paper towel roll. Try to get the triangles on each side to line up with each other. 5. Glue the next triangle so its base is halfway up the first triangle and the point of the first triangle is covered. 6. Repeat step #5 on the other side and for the third triangle. 7. Put glue on the bottom of the paper towel roll so the triangles are pointing up and glue it to the inside bottom of the clay pot. 8. Place cotton balls around the paper towel roll tree to create snow. Please note that our Christmas clay pot crafts should be handled carefully to ensure that they do not break; especially while the glue is drying.
Snowman Clay Pot (ages 8+)
Make your own snowman to keep forever (it will never melt)! For this project you will need: - one small clay pot - three styrofoam balls that are different sizes (the largest ball should not be bigger that the opening of the pot and all three balls stacked on top of each other should not be taller than the wooden dowel) - black construction paper - googly eyes (optional) - push pins with circular tops - cotton balls - felt - one wooden dowel (it should be around twice the size of the pot) - black and brown pipe cleaner - glue - scissors
1. Glue the bottom (the flat end) of the wooden dowel to the bottom inside the clay pot. Let dry. 2. Cut out several pieces of black construction paper that are the size of the circular top of the push pins. 3. Glue one of the black construction paper pieces to the circular top of one of the push pins. 4. Repeat step #3 four more times so you end up with five push pins that each have black construction paper covering their circular top. If you have googly eyes, make only three push pins with black construction paper and glue make two push pins with googly eyes on their circular top instead. 5. Place either the two googly eye pins or two pins covered with black construction paper in the smallest styrofoam ball for eyes. 6. Cut a piece of the black pipe cleaner that is about as long as the space between the two eyes. Bend the pipe cleaner piece into a "U" shape and bend the ends back. Stick the ends into the smallest styrofoam ball underneath the eyes to create a mouth. 7. Place the other three push pins in a line on the medium sized styrofoam ball for buttons. 8. Carefully slide the largest styrofoam ball so the wooden dowel goes through it. Push the ball down so only the very top of the ball can be seen. 9. Slide the medium styrofoam ball on next and then slide the smallest ball on top of that one. Be sure that you don't place the head upside-down. Make sure the eyes and mouth are on the same side as the buttons. 10. Place cotton balls in the clay pot around the snow man to make snow. 11. Cut two pieces of the brown pipe cleaner and stick them in on either side of the medium ball for arms. 12. Cut a thin strip of felt. 13. Wrap the strip of felt around the snowman and glue it into place to create a scarf.
Both of our Christmas clay pot crafts say to use cotton balls as snow to surround your snowman or tree. You may want to glue the cotton balls down to each other to decrease the chance of ruining your project or accidentally causing them to fall out. Therefore, you can enjoy your Christmas clay pot crafts for many years to come.
