Crafts With
String
Crafts with string are a great timeless tradition.
If you are new to
making string bracelets, before you read this page, you should visit
our how
to make string bracelets
page to learn the basic knots (forward knot, backwards knot, etc.) that
will make the stitches on this page very simple and easy to follow.
Crafts with string make great projects
that can be done anywhere on the go, at home, indoors, and outdoors and
the finished crafts make great gifts for any occasion. Follow our
simple directions with accompanying pictures to make string bracelets
with beautiful stitches that look very complicated but secretly are
very easy, quick, and fun to make. There are no specific age
suggestions for stitches because some children can pick them up faster
than others. However, after explanations and a few tries, younger
children can usually complete the stitches with little to no help.
Start off with the candy stripe stitch and then once you are good at
that, the v stitch is a piece of cake.
Candy Stripe
Candy stripe is probably
the easiest stitch to learn. If you
are just starting out, this is a great first stitch!
For this stitch you need at least 3 equal-sized string pieces of
different colors.
- Tie the tops of all of the strings together
with a simple knot.
-
Put the strings in
the order that you want.
-
Take the color you
want first, and make a forward knot (discussed on the how
to make string bracelets page) on
each of the other colors.
-
Once you are finished
with that the colored string
you started with should now be all the way on the right of the line.
Take the next color that should now be on the far left and
make a forward knot on each of the colors.
- Repeat step 4 over and over again until the
bracelet is at a desired length.

The V-Stitch
The
V-Stitch may seem difficult but if you follow the directions correctly
and used the pictures, it won't seem hard at all. A lot of our crafts
with string are related, therefore to make doing the v-stitch easier,
we suggest that you learn how to do the candy stripe stitch and are
comfortable with it.
For this stitch you need at least 3 colors.
- Take all the
colors that you have chosen and fold them over, so you have 2 of each
color.
Line each color up so they are in the same order , opposite of each
other. (Use
picture for reference.)
- Find the first
color you are using (the color all the way on the far left) and do a
forward knot on each of the other colors up until the middle.
- Take the same
color, but on the other side (the color and the far right), and make a
backwards knot on each of the other colors up until the middle.
- Tie both colors
in the middle. It does not matter whether you tie them with a forwards
or backwards.
- Repeat until the
bracelet is at a desired length.
Remember that all knots on the left side of the bracelet will be
forward
knots and all knots on the right side of the bracelet will be backwards
knots.
