For this project you will need:
- A paper towel roll
- A toilet paper roll
- Scissors
- Glue
- A cup (or anything else that can be used to trace a circle)
- Five straws
- A pencil (or anything else that can be used to make holes in the
paper towel roll)
- Construction paper (at least one sheet should be yellow or orange)
1. Using your pencil or another object, poke nine holes across
the top of the paper towel roll. The holes should be wide enough for a
straw to fit inside.
2. Trace the cup or another circular object on a piece of construction
paper and a piece of cardboard.
3. Glue the two circles together.
4. Glue the toilet paper roll to the construction paper side of the two
circles that were glued together in step 3.
5. Using the scissors, cut a small strip of paper that is a little
longer than the open top of the toilet paper roll.
6. Glue the strip of paper across the open top of the toilet paper roll.
7. With the unpunched side of the paper towel roll facing down, glue it
along the open top of the toilet paper roll so it is on the strip of
paper.
8. Using the scissors, cut the four of the five straws in half.
9. Cut the fifth straw into two pieces. One piece should be longer than
halfway and the other should be shorter than half way. You will not
need the shorter piece.
10. Glue a small piece of yellow or orange construction paper to the
top of each straw piece to make a candle.
11. Place each straw candle into a hole in the paper towel roll. The
largest straw candle should be placed the middle.
12. Put glue around each straw candle once it is in the hole to keep it
in place. Let dry.
Feel free to decorate your menorah however you like. You may want to wrap the paper towel and toilet paper towel rolls in colorful paper before you start to make your menorah more decorative. Holiday stickers also work well for decorating. Children may need help making the menorah especially poking the holes in the paper towel roll. Please note that this menorah should NOT be used for real candles. Happy Holidays!
For this Hanukah crafts for kids project you will need:
- Two sheets of black construction paper
- Colored cellophane or tissue paper
- Tape
- Scissors
- A craft knife
- Glue
- A cheese grater
- Old crayons
- Waxed paper
- Iron
- String or yarn (optional)
1. Have an adult cut out a large candle shape on the two
sheets of black construction paper. The candle stem and flame should
not be attached.
2. Cut a large rectangle out of the colored cellophane or tissue paper
that is slightly larger than the hole made for the candle stem.
3. Tape the rectangle onto one sheet of black construction paper so it
is covering the candle stem hole.
4. For the flame, grate yellow, orange, and red crayons using a cheese
grater.
5. Using the scissors, cut two squares of wax paper. They should be at
least four inches square.
6. Spread the shavings from the crayons onto one of the wax paper
squares and cover it with the other square.
7. Cover the sides of the squares that are not touching the shavings
with newspaper.
8. Have an adult press the squares lightly with a dry iron and then let
it cool.
9. After it has cooled, cut out a piece of the squares that is slightly
larger than the hole made for the flame.
10. Tape the piece to the same black paper as before. The piece should
cover the flame cutout.
11. Glue the second sheet of black paper to the first. Be sure to glue
it so it cover the tape and cutout holes for the candle stem and flame
line up.
You may wish to hang your creation. If so, punch a hole in the top and thread it with the yarn or string. Tape can also be used to tape your creation to a window.
