Dog Costume (ages 8+)
This craft makes a great quick costume. It requires some adult supervision/assistance.
For this craft you will need:
- One cardboard egg carton
- A stapler
- Paint (it should either be brown, black, or white)
- Paintbrushes
- A headband (it should be the same color as the paint you are using)
- A hole puncher
- Sewing elastic
- Glue
- Light-gauge craft wire
- Colored markers
- Black construction paper
- Scissors
- Cut out an individual egg cup.
- Make breathing holes on the bottom using the hole punch or by poking it with a scissor.
- Paint
the invidual egg cup/nose either black, brown, or white with black
spots. Paint the headband the same color if it is not already. Let dry.
- Cut out a small triangle from the black construction paper and glue it to the front of the nose.
- Use a marker to draw on a mouth.
- Cut a piece of sewing elastic to fit around the child's head.
- Staple the ends of the sewing elastic to the sides of the egg cup.
- Cut ears out of the carton top. Use the flat part for flat ears or the corners for bent ears.
- Paint the ears the same color as the headband and nose. Let dry.
- Punch holes in the bottom of the ears.
- Attach them to the headband using the wire by threading the wire through the holes and wrapping it around the headband.
There are many different types of dogs so there are many varieties for decorating our kids dog crafts. Try
different colors and varieties to make different types of dogs. For
example, use a white headband and make a white nose with black spots to
make a dalmation. For a quick halloween costume, put on the headband
and the nose and throw on a shirt of the same color for a cute dog
costume.
Dog Craft Idea #1:
For a cute party game, cut
out circles of construction paper and paint or draw pawprints on the
frint. Hide a small dog-themed prize and write clues on the back of
each circle leading to the prize. Then have the party guests follow the
paw prints to get to the prize. Like all of our kids dog crafts, feel
free to be creative and add your own twist. There are many different
varieties to this game.
Doggy Pencil Holder (ages 10+)
For this craft you will need:
- Glue
- Felt
- Goggly eyes
- 4 pinch-style wooden clothespins
- One small, black pom-pom
- Craft apints or colored markers
- Pencil or pen
- For the front end of the dog, pinch open a clothespin and apply glue to the inner surface of the opened end.
- Clamp the glued end onto a second clothespin right behind the metal spring.
- For the tail end of the dog, clamp the last two clothespins together, clamping them so that one holds the other wide open.
- To
complete the dog, fit the opened end of the back half onto the lower
end of the front half. Use glue to bond the two sections.
- Give the dog a colored coat by painting it or drawing on it with marker.
- Cut out floppy ears from the felt.
- Glue the ears to the top of the head.
- Cut out four circles from the felt and glue them onto the dog's four paws.
- Glue the goggly eyes onto the dog, one on each side of the head.
- Pinch open the dog's mouth and insert a pencil or pen, balancing its weight equally on both sides.
This
craft makes a great gift or a great party favor. Encourage each person
to be creative with decorating their dog. Kids dog crafts are great
because there are so many different types of dogs, which gives everyone
so many decorating options for crafts. Let your imagination soar and
have fun!
Dog Craft Idea #2:
Cardboard
boxes are a great foundation for kids dog crafts. Turn the box upside down,
cut a hole, and paint it to make a doghouse. Or leave it upright and
decorate it and fill it with stuffed animal dogs for a doggy bed.
Sometimes the best children's toys are the most simple ones, so get out
a cardboard box and let your children lead the way.
